Boston Comic Con 2013 is coming to the World Seaport Trade Center this weekend on August 3 and 4. In the world of comic fandom, this is A BIG DEAL. Used to be (at least, in the 1980’s—as far back as this Beacon Inn host can recall), if you spent your free time reading comics, you probably also spent school time avoiding getting stuffed into a locker. These days, comic characters are a big part of pop culture.
Beginning in the late 1980s with the release of Tim Burton’s Batman, and snowballing in the early aughts with Hellboy, X-Men, Spiderman, and a number of other Marvel and DC Comics-adapted films, comics went mainstream. Today, if you haven’t seen the Batman movies, you risk being an outcast, but without superpowers.
Boston Comic Con brings hope to Brookline and Boston residents of learning the ins-and-outs of comic cool. If you saw a Batman movie but don’t know what a Hellboy is, this convention is for you, as Hellboy creator Mike Mignola will be there to discuss his work, including work on The Hobbit. Surely, you’ve heard of The Hobbit?
Book a room to stay with us at the Beacon Inn in Brookline for Comic Con 2013, and our front desk hosts will throw in directions to all of the best comic shops in Boston for free. Don’t be the last kid (or adult) on your block to find out what it means to be retconned!
